My Students

This past September I was appointed teacher of a 6:1:1 special education class on Staten Island. My students disabilities range from autism and mental retardation to severe emotional illness. Even though they are chronologically a certain age, their cognitive abilities gear in the pre-k to kindergarten.

I believe that hands on is minds on and as such, I need child and user friendly, visually stimulating math and ELA resources to move my students and instill in them a love of learning.

I strongly believe every child can learn, at their own pace. I came to my classroom with some basic teaching supplies but was my dismay that I basically had no resources to teach the students I had. I also need additional teacher resources so that they will have so much fun that they will not believe they are also learning.

In the short time I have been a teacher, I already have such a love for what I do. I only wish I have the best resources do teach with. Thank you for your consideration in helping me!

My Project

The children would benefit from the materials and manipulatives listed by being able to brake into learning centers such as ELA and math. My children learn best from having hands on experiences like matching magnetic numbers and letters to pictures.

The children in my class love music and a calmness comes over them when they are able to listen to books on videos and various CDs.

Having a CD station in the classroom would benefit the children in allowing them in experience learning in a different way.

Having a leveled library would benefit the children because it would boost their self esteem as they would finally learn to read. A whole new world would open to them.
