My Students

My students are from a large, urban community that welcomes families from all over the globe. They bring a special blend of linguistic diversity, background knowledge, prior experiences, and culture to our school. We are a Title I school; I have 30 students in my classroom. Free breakfast and lunch are available to every child in our building each day, which are now remotely served.

My students are creative and enthusiastic about learning.

They would benefit from a variety of classroom resources to help increase their success at school and at home.

COVID-19 has affected what we know as 'learning.' Remote learning, or modified learning is the new 'norm.' Educators are uncertain of what the 2020-2021 school year will look like; however, despite our uncertainties, we are eager to make sure that our students have a successful year!

My Project

My goal for the 2020-2021 school year and beyond is to create a library of texts that represents diverse characters, that are anti bias, and that are accurate and appealing to children. Choosing anti-bias literature means assessing who has written the text, what the characters are doing, how power and activism are introduced, and how characters are represented in their community rather than in isolation. A diverse bookshelf means providing representation and diverse perspectives for my students; nonetheless, these text won't be stand alone props. It is important to note: a diverse bookshelf differs from anti-racist teaching. As we progress forward (2020-2021), it will also be crucial to look inward and at the system to assess how my biases, practices, and thoughts may harm students of color.

It is essential to offer my students texts with people like them and their families and also offer texts about people who are different from them/their families.

More than half of the children enrolled in U.S public schools are BIPOC, but only 22% of children's books published in 2016 were about people of color. Fewer than 13% of texts published were written by BIPOC. Students should read stories about African Americans, Latinx, Asian Americans, Arab Americans, Native Americans, labor activists, international populations, women, etc.

I will use texts like 'Sit In: How Four Friends Stood Up by Sitting Down' and 'Malala's Magic Pencil' to teach activism. Young people have been at the forefront of every social movement since the beginning of time. Even Kindergarten students can learn about activism and be activists in their school/communities.

Additionally, texts like 'Julian's a Mermaid' and 'When Aidan Became a Big Brother' will allow students to discuss gender/gender stereotypes. And texts, like 'Visiting Day' and 'My Brother Charlie' will aid in discussing different family structures.
