Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Some would say that 4th grade is one of the toughest academic year in elementary school. Many students face up to five standardized state test this year. This leaves very little time in the classroom to do anything but prepare for these anxious driven exams. Anyone would dread coming to school knowing that they have to take all these test!

However, my students have this amazing desire to be the very best they can be and personalities that light up a room.

Each day they come into my classroom with smiling faces and share how their night was. Whether it was falling off the bed or having trouble with their homework, they aren't afraid of expressing themselves in the most genuine way. Some of my students struggle with reading and/or math but they try 100% everyday to get better and have the support of each other. They have beautiful hearts and as their teacher I truly believe my students will make a difference in this world someday.

My Project

Flexible seating is a new way to optimize student choice and make students accountable for their work. Currently, they have only two options while they are doing their work. The first option is to work on their desk or sit at the rug. Many of my students fly to the rug because well plainly, they are tired of their desk! However, even at the rug many students seem to loose focus and sitting on the hard floor for long periods of time leaves my students soar and complaining.

My students are going to fall in love with these flexible seating options.

The floor cushions are going to be perfect for my students who want to sit on the floor but don't fit on the rug, or maybe even add a little cushion to those students who are already sitting at the rug. The lap desks will be offered to students so that they can have the opportunity to work where ever they feel most productive. The stools can be used for students who want to use the higher tables while they work, or want to hold a book club discussion in a fish bowl discussion manner.

These materials will make a big difference in our classroom because students are free to make choices about where they will work. This helps build autonomy and holds them accountable for the decisions that they made. This will help students become conscience thinkers and think about what is best for them. Like most students, they have only had the option of sitting at their desk or the rug, with these new options it will bring a breath of fresh air in the classroom and students will be more engaged while doing their work.
