My students are curious, excited, collaborative and enjoy diving into new mathematical challenges. They enjoy exploring complex problems, looking for patterns and trying to make mathematical generalizations. At times, they get confused and unsure how to approach a new problem, but they try to consider the problem in a different way, they experiment, they get things wrong, but they persist. Yet, the truly amazing things my students do is that they ask new questions for us to consider – what if we traveled to the Moon at the pace of a snail, how long would it take to get there? How many numbers are between 3.5 and 3.6? It is their thinking through complex problems and posing new problems that make my students truly amazing mathematicians!
My school is part of a NYC Outward Bound School.
We are a diverse and respectful community committed to developing students and staff who are kind, open-minded, persistent, responsible, and courageous. With support from peers, staff, families and school partners, students engage in challenging academic and social experiences that prepare them for college level learning and full participation in civic life.
My Project
My school is beginning to use the innovative Desmos Middle School curriculum and students will be using the laptops on a daily basis to access this online curriculum. This curriculum was designed with the belief that all students are great mathematical thinkers, but that not all students feel they are great mathematical thinkers in math classrooms. This curriculum invites students to play with the mathematics, to test out their ideas and draw their own conclusions. It invites students to be wrong and build on their wrong answers. It invites students to think about solving problems in different ways. Put simply, it invites students to show their intriguing and truly amazing mathematical thinking. These laptops will make accessing this curriculum possible!
