Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

A typical day in my class starts with a series of warm-ups designed to engage the body and mind. We spend most of our time strengthening sight-reading skills. By the year's end, they can quickly and accurately read music they have never seen before! My classes are loud, creative, fun, and rigorous!

I have 100 students in my choirs.

75% of my students come from extreme poverty, and many are even homeless. Although we are a Title I school, our students are not any less exceptional! They are passionate, intelligent, creative, and hard-working. My students come from inner-city San Antonio, often from traumatic home lives. They are forced to grow up a lot faster than their peers in other schools, but still have a strong willingness to learn and better themselves. This year our school has transformed into an in-district computer science and coding charter school with an emphasis on project-based learning and gender-based instruction. My choir class creates a safe space for the students to learn to appropriately express the emotional baggage that each student carries with them from the first day. They do not typically get an opportunity for this in any other class.

My Project

My students will be able to use the choir risers every day, from daily rehearsals and sight-reading, to public performances. My students will learn how to sing with proper posture in a choir formation. The risers will encourage them to listen, sing, and function as a group. A favorite quote of mine is, "The better you look and feel about yourself, the better you will perform." The risers will make the kids feel like a professional ensemble. They will be better equipped to practice performance etiquette and techniques.

My students only get to experience the use of risers at district or region events and contests.

However, without the consistency of singing on the risers, they are unprepared for the spatial and aural awareness that comes with singing in that particular environment. The risers will help my students feel more confident in their appearance. My students are talented, skilled, and hard-working, and I don't want them to have a disadvantage just because they themselves cannot afford the materials.
