My Students

SDHS is situated among the Blue Mountains and beautiful valleys of VA. We are small town - the school consists of about 700 students. The lifestyle is more simplistic, traditional, and family-oriented. The students are eager to discuss important topics, but often apathetic when it comes to the classics, since they fail to see the connection between it and their real lives. However, the school has very low funding when it comes to updating the curriculum. Still, to excite these students, teachers need more applicable literature, more modern titles.

This project will help students in American Literature class - 11th grade.

These students are more mature than their underclassmen, as they have found social circles for the most part, and are now ready to plan their futures and understand the type of people they want to be. They are eager to know themselves better, and to discuss the problems of our world - issues with mental health, racial tensions, social hierarchies, etc. These kids want to understand why 'normal' is normal, and why they are being pushed to act a certain way and believe certain 'truths.' They aren't necessarily rebellious, just innovative and reflective.

My Project

In the process of modernizing and revamping the reading selections of my classroom, I have come across the need to give choice to my students in American Literature - to give them options of several great American novels, so they can read about the experiences and themes that most interest them. I plan to allow them to read in small groups - just like adults do in book clubs - working through choice novels together to better understand the views of the author, the mastery of the writing, and the human universals in the characters. This project will help build those book clubs. They can choice great classics like "I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings," or modern sensations like Phil Klay's depiction of modern war in "Redeployment."

I teach a total of 64 English 11 American literature students, who will be able to find themselves and their love of reading more successfully through the option of choice in literature.
