I work with high school students on the autism spectrum in a self-contained 6:1+1 classroom. Our school is located in a large community HS and we are included in many extracurricular activities with the general education population including parties, plays, and assemblies. I teach all subjects with an emphasis on life skills and work readiness.
My students range from ages 15-18 and are on the 1st to 3rd academic levels.
We enjoy working together especially on cooking and baking projects and often get to go out in the community to shop and take walks.
My goal for my students is to provide them with as much love, understanding, acceptance, and academic/work opportunities given to any student so that they grow to their fullest potential.
My Project
Our November curriculum focused on book genres. My students LOVE nonfiction reading and have expressed more of an interest in reading this month. I chose this specific reading set because of the variety of topics and could see titles that would appeal to all of my students. I have recently set up a reading lounge in my classroom and these books would be a wonderful addition to our library.
Nonfiction stories have given my students a chance to challenge themselves.
They have also expressed interest in topics that they may not have gravitated to in the past. The entire class has shown progress and interest in the area of independent reading time.
