My Students

I am a 2nd grade teacher at an elementary school that's in a poverty-stricken area. My school is a barrier-free school. This means that my school opens its doors to all children, regardless of their physical or mental handicap. All children work together, it's the way it should be in all schools.

This year, I am teaching an ELL (English Language Learner) class.

This means that all of my students' first language is not English. I have children from all over the world in my class. Most speak Spanish, French or varying West African dialects. Some children enter my class not knowing any English at all, and leave in June being fluent in English. It's truly amazing to watch my students throughout the year as they achieve a solid grasp on the language. I work in an extremely impoverished area. My children have dealt with more in their short lives than most adults will deal within a lifetime. Many have just immigrated to this country. My students have little to nothing to call their own. I give them as much as I can on my own, but that only spreads so far.

My Project

At the beginning of each school year, I ask my students how many have a dictionary at home. In my 13 years of teaching, I have never had more than 6 students in a class raise their hand. Many children don't even know what a dictionary is. This is so disheartening and truly saddens me. I don't know how I made it through elementary school myself without a dictionary. In order to give every child in my class the opportunity to own their own thick, hardcover dictionary that is full of all of the information and facts that I thrived on as a child, I am asking for 32 Scholastic children's dictionaries. These dictionaries will be used both inside and outside of school. Daily vocabulary assignments will be given in class, as well as homework assignments that entails them using their dictionary. They will be able to freely bring them home and back to school so they can explore them and call them their own.

I had dictionaries donated to my class 3 years ago.

The assignments that I gave them greatly broadened their knowledge base, as well as their vocabulary. Being that I am teaching ELL (English Language Learner) students this year, the vocabulary aspect is particularly important. I, as well as my students, would be incredibly grateful to receive these dictionaries. Once the dictionaries are placed in my students hands, the possibilities are endless!
