This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

"I am the child with special needs. I don't learn easily when judged by the world's measuring stick. What I do know is the infinite joy that can be found in the little things." - Anonymous I am searching for ways to make the world's measuring stick work for my students rather than against them.

I have been teaching students with special needs for the past 5 years and I am convinced they have taught me more than I could have ever taught them.

This year my class is made up of 12 students with very diverse needs,from Autism and Hearing Impairments to severe Speech and Physical Difficulties and Learning Disabilities. They also come from a high poverty neighborhood and many of them speak little English due to the high ESL (English Second Language) need in my school.

My Project

Needless to say the traditional means of Reading and Writing can not always apply to my students and it leaves me searching to find creative ways of teaching reading and writing. I recently attended a meeting about finding multiple pathways into Reading and Writing for children with special needs. They talked about how a "Writing Piece" doesn't need to be pencil to paper writing. It can simply be video taping a child telling a story. Or if a child is able to draw pictures but unable to write the words to express their story they can video tape their pictures while they verbally tell the story. They also discussed the many uses for the camera such as video taping the children acting out stories they've been read to improve their comprehension. I am requesting an easy to use video recording device for the classroom that I can use to help my students during Reader's and Writer's Workshops.

Not only would this donation help these students build on their Reading and Writing skills, but it would also build their confidence...something that could never be taught.
