I work in a self contained special education elementary school for children with a variety of disabilities. My class consists of 6 children with autism. My students do not have spontaneous speech and need help with most activities. It is very hard to find programs to teach my students. They have little knowledge of the world around them. Science and social studies are two content areas often overlooked in today's rigid curriculum. Finding appropriate materials to teach my students is also difficult. I feel that awareness of their surroundings is very important for my students. I am requesting materials that will help me to teach my students about their community and the environment. My students will learn about community helpers, their responsibilities and purpose in the community. They will also learn about the weather and physical changes in the environment. These topics will be taught during morning circle and in small group instruction. Please help me to help my students understand their world.
