Help Mr. Corral

My school is located in a culturally diverse neighborhood. There are families from Mexico, El Salvador, Korea, the Philippines, and Bangladesh to name a few. The school is located in a low socioeconomic urban area of Los Angles with the entire school qualifying for a free lunch. The diversity of the school makes it a wonderful place to work. I recently embarked on a classroom project in conjunction with a 5th grade teacher giving students an opportunity to celebrate their family heritage. The project was designed to give our students a voice through multimedia. Each student created a digital story related to their heritage using one scanner, a PC, and windows movie maker. The stories our children produced ranged from cute & sassy to the tear-jerker. I can't express how pleased I was with the work they put into creating and then narrating their stories. Some students stayed hours after school and donated their recess time to complete their projects. The project was quite a success, however there were some "snags" that caused the project to take longer than expected. The "snags" revolved around scanning and saving the media in an easily accessible format. Unfortunately the laptops at the school are a little on the older side and we had difficulty saving to CD-RW's. Also, our network is not very reliable making it difficult and time consuming to save to the school's file server. This project tapped into all areas of learning for our students. It allowed students to excel in different areas. Our artists had wonderful illustrations and our excellent readers had impeccable narrations. The project motivated students to take ownership of their work. While we did work through the kinks, having a multiple sheet fed scanner and individual flash memory storage devices for the students would have streamlined the process. You can help give our students a voice. Empowering them at such an early age will motivate their learning and honoring their experiences will increase their self-confidence.
