This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Do you remember sitting in the back of the class and not being able to see what the teacher was writing on the board? For my students that have visual needs, do not have glasses, or are sitting in the back of the classroom, it is difficult to access the curriculum and lessons.

This is my first year working with the students at this school.

They are wonderful children with diverse cultural backgrounds. Our children have high needs; some are learning English and others need extra academic support. They are hard working children who are eager to learn. I will be teaching a fifth grade class with about 28 students in a school that has about 50% of students receiving free or reduced lunch. Our school is an older building that is trying to bring technology to students but is facing budget limitations.

My Project

This innovative technology will make a world of difference for our class. Modeling expectations and demonstrating skills have a tremendous impact on learning. A document camera will allow me to model reading strategies, writing techniques, math problem solving, and science demonstrations in a large screen format that students can see from anywhere in the room. When I used a document camera in my last school, I noticed that students were more able to access the lessons that I was teaching. I saw a huge difference in the quality of writing, marked improvement in math problem solving, and increased understanding and excitement for science labs. My lessons included; teacher modeling, viewing primary source documents that are not available to the whole class, students modeling and sharing their work, and zoomed in demonstrations of science and art techniques. I want to ensure these experiences are available to my new students, regardless of the budget cuts that schools are facing.

The donation of a document camera will greatly impact the success of our class, and will allow me to make more materials accessible to students.

I can display books, writing samples, scientific tools, math manipulatives that are 3D, art projects, and student work. The flexible head allows for views of objects that require a vertical view such a graduated cylinder or triple beam balance. With this document camera, I will be able to demonstrate for a whole class what was limited to small groups.
