My Students

Exposing students to how others live across the world is an opportunity help them to becoming better citizens in this world. Once our students see that we are all the same across the world, and how the unique differences make us special. Hopefully, it will help the students be better adults.

I teach in a school district that is having a very difficult time with it's budget.

My class is a class of Gifted students from first to third grade and they love to learn about other students and lifestyles from all around the world. Unfortunately, because of the budget problems we don't have the money for anything that is enrichment. The students I work with are craving for enrichment. Many of these student's don't get a lot of exposure to anything outside of the town that we live in, and don't have an opportunity to travel. This magazine and these books would give them some exciting information that they are looking for. Watching the sparkle in their eyes when they are getting new information is so exciting.

My Project

Using the "Time" weekly magazine to work with the students on current events will help our students to not only be aware of what is going on, but it will also help our students become aware of other students around the world. As we come across each area in the "Time" magazines- they will learn about the Seven Continents. I also want the children to go onto "epals" and to make a Pen-pal that they will correspond with across the World. I will have them use the books about children across the world to learn about the children they are corresponding with and to be able to understand what the children's lives are like. They will do a project on the country that they choose and learn about the children, the schools, and the climate. They will have different ways to report this back to me. Podcast, writing or poster.

Teaching students about others around the world is so important, because it is the only way to teach compassion.

The Dalai Lama says: “Basically we are all the same human beings with the same potential... The important thing is to realize the positive side and try to increase that; realize the negative side and try to reduce."
