Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

First, I want this unit to be enjoyable and engaging for my students. Second, I would like to see my students reflect on their year long engagement with identity and go beyond their individual experiences and community to connect their identity to global issues around the world.

I teach ninth grade English at a second year high school in the Bronx, New York.

My school is a very high needs school with 100% student population receiving free lunch and free metrocards. Engagement is tough for some of my students and a very relatable unit will help them connect with other people's experiences and will help them engage in social justice issues. Eventually, their interest in child labor will help promote a need to reflect and change the environment and community they come from. My students love talking about issues related to injustice and love talking about issues that promote positive change.

My Project

Sold will be used as a part of a Child Labor Unit. Students will be reading articles about why child labor exists, who engages in child labor, what people are doing to help fight child labor, and how children actually experience their labor. Sold will be used to create empathy and an understanding in my students about the daily experiences some children go through while working in horrible conditions. My unit will not succeed without Sold because if my students do not feel a connection to Lakshmi then they will not feel a connection to the injustice of child labor and will not feel the need to create change.

My school cannot get these books without your donations.

We have class sets of only 3 different novels. My students need options of what to read and what to learn. They deserve an eclectic education and will greatly benefit learning about child labor, experiences outside of the Bronx, and the connection of the Bronx to the global world.
