Help Mrs. Deraps

Most of my at-risk female students are avid readers. Because they have such a love for reading, I'd love to provide a couple of new titles for use in literature circles and as part of our school's Chick Lit Book Club. I teach alternative education to high school students, aged fourteen to eighteen. These students are in danger of dropping out of high school if they do not make some sort of connection to what's happening in our school. I have found that one way to grow a sense of community (and a love of reading) with teens girls is to host a book club for girls and to offer current titles for small lit circles. Girls love this type of forum! They chat and giggle about characters, discuss what they would've done if they were the main character, and all the while, they're building relationships with one another and working through social problems presented in the stories as a group. It's amazing to be a part of this!

I've been co-advising the book club and running lit circles in my classroom for the last four years. Unfortunately, we're out of new titles! I would hate to see students leave the club or not be able to participate in the lit circles during English class. These girls have simply read EVERYTHING that I have available. I wish that I had enough resources to provide more titles for them, but right now this is the best that I can manage. The girls would be so excited to be able to keep the book club and lit circles going this year.

I need two sets of books to provide some fresh titles for a group of about twenty girls who love to read. Most of these girls are at-risk of dropping out of high school due to teen pregnancy, challenging home lives, and low self-esteem. Providing new titles to keep them reading would also allow continued conversation and discussion about real-life problems and how to overcome adversity. These types of in-the-moment discussions are hard to attain without the help of current young adult literature.

Please know that your donation will provide books to girls who are learning to love the process of reading. These girls feel empowered through the discussions and interactions we have in our book club and in our lit circles. I have had many girls tell me that they keep coming to school because they are so invested in the connections they're making with characters and their peers through our discussions. Please help us to continue to inspire these girls to stay in school and to make good decisions!
