My Students

This is our fifth year of reading and discussing books in the Chick Lit Book Club. We have our twenty members and are a diverse and vibrant group. We meet once a month at our school library and love reading!

The girls in this club come from all walks of life.

They are economically and socially diverse. It is so incredible to see these girls, who might never have known one another otherwise, come together to off support and advice. We live in a rural community, but our girls struggle with issues that plague every other community in our country. In our book club, we talk about eating disorders, peer pressure, teen pregnancy--All of the tough stuff that today's teen girls deal with. Our hope is that the girls in this club will gain the confidence and self-esteem necessary to avoid these too-common problems.

My Project

There is no better way to reach a teen girl than through a teen character in a book. I have found that teens are so peer-driven that they have a tough time taking the advice of adults. (Probably not news to any of you!) But, if they read about a teen who is dealing with issues and finding solutions to problems, they are less likely to feel alone. I wish that you all could listen in on our discussions. They are awesome! Our girls make such great connections and really open up about their lives. This is all possible by reading a book and sharing thoughts. That's where it all begins.

Our school is facing terrible budget cuts right now.

Though our club is popular and well-attended, there is no money for it. The non-profit organization that used to support our club has folded and we have no money to purchase books for next year. I would truly hate to have to abandon these girls and this club after four amazing years of running it.
