My Students

Comfort is the Key! My special needs students have various disabilities that they have to face on a day to day basis. They are also often faced with unfavorable conditions at home. Being comfortable and secure while reading a favorite book could make the world of difference in their everyday lives!

My class is made up of 12 special needs learners.

They are in the first grade and their ages range from 6-7 years old. The disabilities that they cope with include learning disabilities, speech & language impairments, autism, and emotional disturbances. Our school is a public elementary school in New York City. The neighborhood is rich in culture and diversity, but poor in crime and violence. It is important that when they come to school they feel safe and secure. My students deserve a classroom that feels like they don't have a care in the world. Their only tasks - right then & right there - is to enjoy the book that they have open in front of them.

My Project

Bean bag chairs and oversized reading pillows will allow my students to get lost in the stories that they are reading and focus on positive & rewarding messages. These young readers will be able to experience comfort and relaxation while their minds are acting like the sponges that they are soaking up knowledge! They will be able to engage in partner reading and small group reading activities with ease and their main focus will be on reading, not the worries of the outside world.

These 12 youngsters from New York City will be changed forever by these donations.

They will have a safe-haven to go to in their own classroom, whether to collect their thoughts peacefully or curl up next to a favorite book.
