Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

Storytelling is one of the oldest traditions of passing history from one generation to the next and often the best sources for historical events are people who lived during them. I will be teaching "The History of Chicago" next year as an elective at Farragut Career Academy in Chicago's Little Village neighborhood. For this class, I hope to engage my 30 students to be historians in a unique and engaging way. My students are going to participate in an oral history project. For this, students are going to work in teams of three to interview Chicagoans about their experiences in the Windy City and their insight into historical events they witnessed. This project will focus on two groups of people, the immigrant community of Little Village and the African-Americans of the North Lawndale neighborhood. Most of our students live in these neighborhoods. Over the course of this project, students will conduct interviews to learn about life in these neighborhoods and how the areas have changed over the years. They will also be photographing the interviewees and obtaining primary sources from them. Once the interviews are complete, students will create museum-style displays and write papers telling the stories and history of the people of these neighborhoods. This history will be shared with our school, and if successful, with our community as well. In order to make this project a reality, I am asking for tape recorders, tapes, and journals for the student teams to conduct their interviews. The overall objective for my students is to show them that not all history comes from textbooks and that their family, friends, and neighbors have insights into history that can inform, educate, and enlighten. These resources will also be available for other teachers to use on similar projects in the future. Thank you very much for considering my proposal.
