My Project

Chess to Learn is an initiative to expose all students to chess and chess-related thinking by cultivating an interest in chess games in the classroom to introduce and reinforce academic and life skills. Teacher-driven and student participation-oriented, Chess to Learn will allow students to employ the disciplines of chess thinking to all cognitive processes that involve analytical and logical reasoning. As a science teacher, it is important for my students to gain critical thinking and reasoning abilities. Chess is a fun way to promote higher-order thinking, a skill that will benefit students beyond the classroom. During the last 10 mins of instruction, students who have completed their independent assignment can join the “Chess to Learn" area in the classroom to participate in a 5- or 10-minute chess game using a timer and the chess sets I am asking for. Chess to Learn will encourage students who are unfamiliar with the game to learn while serving as an incentive for all students to remain focused on completing classroom assignments to play a game. The foldable tables and stools are easily arranged in a small corner of the classroom. The foldable tables and stools will also be easy to carry into the school’s courtyard during lunch to increase student participation and interest. The chess sets are needed to play the game and the timers will provide structure, promote efficiency, and get the momentum rolling.
