Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

I am a 9th Grade Math teacher in a public high school in the Bronx. More than 80% our students are on a free or reduced lunch plan. Starting this spring my colleague and I are teaching a "Chess and Strategic Games" Elective Class. I'll be working with the 9th grade students and him with the 10th grade students. Our goal for this class is to use strategic games to improve logic skills, social skills and critical thinking skills. There has been a lot of research dedicated to the positive effects of intellectual games, such as chess, in the classroom. We are confident that our students will benefit greatly from this elective and are excited about the coming semester! Because this is a new class we do not have an existing games library at our school. Initially we have just enough chessboards and pieces to share between our two classes. But we want to incorporate other strategic games into this elective as well. That is why I am requesting a class set of mancala Mancala is a game that has been around for centuries. It is played on a wooden board with stones. The object of mancala is to get the most stones into your home. The rules are simple and the game is highly engaging. I remember really enjoying this game as a child. I can't wait to share it with my students.
