Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My school is a thriving community of English language learners. Our students come to us from an incredible variety of places, from China to Mexico to Haiti, with dozens of other countries as well. When you walk through the halls here, you can easily hear half a dozen languages being spoken at any given time. It is truly a fascinating place to teach. All the teachers here work to close the achievement gap that occurs due to the language barrier all our immigrant students face. I am a 9th and 10th grade mathematics teacher, although the chess club that I teach is available to all students at our high school.

Our chess club has just gotten off the ground, and I see many students being drawn in by the complexity of the game. I am sure my students would be thrilled to attend a real chess tournament, but I would need to properly prepare them. Therefore, my students will need to be able to practice playing with chess clocks!

If given chess clocks, my students will be able to use them whenever the chess club meets. I will introduce them to the idea that competitive chess involves the element of time, and how to keep track of the amount of time used by each player during a game with the use of a chess clock. Students will practice the use of chess clocks during games at chess club, which will of course improve their performance in a tournament environment.

Your contribution of chess clocks will make a huge difference to how far my students will be able to go with their pursuit of chess. I hope to not only be able to show you photos of them using these clocks, but also their results after participating in some official tournaments!
