Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

A major part of learning chemistry is learning how to safely complete laboratory work. This hands-on, interactive approach requires materials such as beakers, pipets, burners, and ring stands. The materials in this project will allow more hands-on time for all of my chemistry students.

Our school was created to provide low income students with the opportunity to attend college and follow their dreams.

Students begin taking community college courses in their Freshman year of high school, continuing throughout their high school career and graduating with at least 30 units of college credit. Some students have even graduated with their AA and their high school diploma at the same time! We are a project-based learning community, which means the students are given as many opportunities as possible to apply their learning to a real-world context.

My Project

These materials will be used in a variety of labs. The beakers will be used in dozens of labs throughout the year in both chemistry and AP chemistry. The volumetric pipets will be used in several different AP chemistry labs. And the ring stands have countless numbers of applications. All of these materials will allow students to expand their thinking, which will prepare them for the rigorous world of university coursework. By doing labs, and designing their own experiments, students will be asked to think outside the box to apply chemistry to a practical situation.

Although not particularly glamorous, these materials are basic essentials for a college-level laboratory program, as required by an AP chemistry course.

Thank you for allowing more students to work at the same time, and for helping them learn to think and act like scientists.
