My Students

"Miss, what does the word solubility mean?" I know my students understand the concept, but sometimes challenging unfamiliar words trip them up.

Perhaps you remember your chemistry class and how many challenging words it had.

Well, my students are so motivated to be successful but English is not their first language. Over 75% of my students are first generation immigrants whose families brought them here for a better life and better education. In one of the largest school districts in the country, they are struggling because we are struggling to provide them with the materials to help them be successful.

My Project

To help my students learn the challenging concepts in Chemistry, they need lots of practice with vocabulary. The project I started this year involved each student creating a personalized set of vocabulary flashcards attached with binder rings. My gracious husband helped me drill the holes in the cards. Then, every time an unfamiliar word showed up in class, my students used their vocabulary cards to define and practice the word. However, with little money my students had to purchase the cards. This project has been very successful in getting my students engaged with the words we are learning. With your help, I will be able to provide them to the students next year.

With 98% of my students qualifying for free lunch, they lack many of the financial resources that other students have.

With your help, I will be able to support my students as they develop their vocabulary and chemistry content knowledge. Thank your for your generosity.
