Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

Chemistry "rocks", or least it should. Once again Chemistry was the weakest area on the 10th and 11th grade Science TAKS tests for our students. I am in need of experiments that will leave an impact on the students and help make the connection between the concepts and the lab. The concepts that I hope to reinforce with these materials are physical and chemical properties, and physical and chemical change. I have requested a rock tumbler as an interesting way to show physical change the students will be able to see in a dramatic way a physical change. Usually the drama is associated with a chemical change, but here in a very real way they will be able to see that grinding and cutting on a stone did not change its chemical composition. I also included 4 more spectrum tubes to help study line emissions as a way to help identify elements, currently I just have 2 tubes. I have also requested several kits which address chemical changes, pH, molecular structure, and viscosity. Many of these materials will be able to be used for several years at our school, since we are a very small school in Texas. A kit that says it contains enough materials for 30 students to do the lab three times would mean six years worth of materials for my students. Kits are a wonderful way to make sure that you have manageable amounts chemicals. With your help hopefully my students will be able to achieve better on their Science TAKS and find the fun and excitement of chemistry.
