Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Engaging activities are the best way to learn complex material. By providing my students with lab opportunities and games to reinforce our chemistry unit, I hope to help them construct a deep, meaningful understanding of the material.

I teach about 90 bright and enthusiastic 6th graders in a urban public school in DC.

They come from diverse educational, economic, and cultural backgrounds. The students are curious and love hands-on activities. They really learn the science concepts by applying the results of laboratory explorations. The visual and hands-on reinforcement, as well as the real world applications, really tie the concepts together. My students are always asking when we can do more labs, and I try to do at least 3 or 4 mini-explorations a week to keep their thirst for knowledge alive. However, being at a school with limited resources, it is often difficult to obtain all the materials I would love to incorporate into their experiences.

My Project

The supplies I am asking for will help me engage my students this year and in years to come. The chemistry lab kits are all inquiry-based, meaning they will not only teach my students the concepts they need to master, but will guide them towards forming their own understanding of the concepts. These problem solving and lab process skills will serve my students well in the future. In addition, the review games will help my students build familiarity with the periodic table and the elements.

Without these supplies, my students will be learning most of the chemistry from a textbook and worksheets.

Please help me create a meaningful and engaging unit for my students. They deserve to love chemistry as much as I do.
