Chemistry in Action!

Help me give my students chemistry lab supplies to be able to do in-class experiments with the lab coats, potassium iodide, magnesium ribbon, and burette clamps and out in the field doing water testing with the salinity refractometers.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students attend a high-need high school in New York City. Our school focuses on developing critical thinkers that can express their understanding through projects and defending their work through oral presentations. Most of my students work hard at school, to get to school by public transit, and afterschool, work, take care of their family, or do sports, theater, or college prep.

My students ask curious questions and learn best through hands-on science explorations and involving their communities.

They build on their learning, have needs, and come to school to learn chemistry, neuroscience, computer science, math, and AP English. They ask questions and are curious - even about cacti and water evaporation and batteries and space!

My Project

These supplies will allow my students to experience chemistry firsthand, to learn about the interactions between molecules, and to better understand their neighborhood. I'd like to show students how redox reactions work and the power of reactions by using potassium iodide to make elephant toothpaste, and to practice professional and safe experiments by wearing lab coats.

Students will use the burette holders on ring stands to determine the amount of energy that is contained in the oils of nuts and the differences in calories between regular Cheetos and Flamin' Hot Cheetos.

We are located very close to Central Park in New York City and will use the salinity refractometers, along with the pH paper, to test the water quality throughout the park and make comparisons to their water at home and at school.

These supplies will make a huge difference to the understanding and success of my students' chemistry knowledge and skills. Thank you!
