Chemistry Hands-On Activity

My students need kits and resources, for hands-on activities in chemistry, as well as to see actual distillation process going on in a classroom through teacher demonstration.

My Students

"To see is to believe," this is what makes my students get interested in a lesson. One way to get their attention is to make them do hands-on activity and ask them to answer focus questions based on the activity itself. They are obligated to write a laboratory report based on their results.

My school is a title one school located in North of LA county, Southern California.

The demographic profile of my students are mostly Latinos. Many of them are English learners. One strategy to get their interest on the lesson is by doing hands- on activity. Working in groups and with their hands, these students can understand the important concepts and can answer the follow up activity better.

My Project

"Experience is the best teacher," this is the saying that goes with hands-on activity which is learning by doing things. My students will understand the behavior of electron through flame test activity. In this activity, different samples of elements will show different flame color based on the number of their outermost electron. Another activity is a demonstration on distillation process, showing to the students that it is possible to separate two miscible liquids through their difference in boiling points. The acid/base indicators can be used to test different solutions whether it is an acid or base as well as telling the exact acidity or alkalinity through the use of a pH indicator.

Learning by doing things is an effective strategy to make my students understand a difficult concept.

This project is important because it supports the strategy that I need to do in order my students can learn and understand the concept better. I believe my students can be academically prepared to get a good grade in chemistry as well as do better in a state test given towards the end of school year.
