Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

At this point, there is only enough equipment for the teacher to perform demonstrations for the students. Students deserve opportunities to perform chemistry first-hand to get the science experience they deserve.

The school is a relatively small charter school within the LAUSD network in Los Angeles, CA.

As a relatively new school, there is currently a clear lack of science equipment which is keeping my students from achieving their full potentials. The students are incredibly eager to learn more about chemistry and its applications to the world around them and are constantly looking for the next time they can run an experiment. While they entered excited about chemistry because of their limited experience with chemistry through television shows like Breaking Bad, they have not yet experienced the full scope of the subject. However, it is clear that they wish to learn more as their excitement about science has led to countless Instagram uploads and Snapchats of demos done in class. But more than anything, they want to be performers of science, not just spectators.

My Project

Students will be able to perform experiments first hand. Now that our class is entering into the realm of stoichiometry/chemical reactions, it is more important than ever for the classroom to have chemicals and equipment ready to satisfy their curiosity. My students need reagents/chemicals, electronic balances, and new glassware to run reactions and explore the expansive realm of chemistry/sciences. Students will learn more about Acid/Base reactions which play a crucial role in how our environment is rapidly changing and will continue to change in the 21st century. In this way, they will become more socially aware through the lens of science. Exploration into oxidation/reduction reacts, the role of catalysts, effects of dissolved substances in solutions, and numerous other topics will be done by the students over the course of this year. Why do cars have platinum in them? Why is the Statute of Liberty green if the metal it's made of is actually brown? Why do fire extinguishers only work on some fires? These are a few questions that students will be able to confidently answer from a different perspective by the year's end.

The classroom will be able to enter into a more inquiry based style of learning.

Students will be able to explore the concepts and analyze it themselves (and with each other) through data collection/analysis. In this way, students will develop into critical thinkers who are more self-driven learners. The science classroom has traditionally been a 'memorizing facts' class for many of these students. The goal is to give the students a scientific lens through which to critically analyze the world.
