My Students

You can look at pictures of soil layers in a textbook, or you can go outside to collect and analyze soil samples. My students want to experience science!

I teach grades 6, 7, and 8 in a rural Pennsylvania district.

My students come from a wide range of socio-economic backgrounds. Students come to the middle school from one of two district elementary schools or several local private schools. Many of my students are not interested in science because there's "too much reading" or because it's "boring." I want students to love science and learning as much as I do.

My Project

The supplies that I'm requesting will enable students to participate in meaningful physical science lab activities. The pH test kit and graduated cylinders are part of an Ecology unit in which we travel to a local state park and do water samples. The students will also use the test strips in our Chemistry unit to learn about acids and bases. The soil sample and fossil kits are part of the Geology unit. The sample kit will also be helpful in Ecology as we talk about soil quality and conservation.

The projects that my students complete this year will carry over into high school and beyond.

Besides the thrill of completing hands-on science activities, the students will use the scientific method to think critically. They will support their peers to successfully plan labs, collect data, and communicate their findings. This project is much more than "just" middle school science- it's activating metacognition and guiding students to work with others to achieve a common goal.
