My Project

At MAST (the Marine Academy of Science and Technology) on the campus of Florida International University on Biscayne Bay, in North Miami, Florida, we value the safety of the students we nurture every day. Security breaches at K-12 schools all across the nation, many with tragic results, have made mandatory emergency drills a routine. The 2018 Valentine's Day tragedy at Marjory Stoneman Douglas Senior High School, just north of us in Parkland, Florida, was a sad reminder that although we live in a tropical paradise, we are not immune from the terror and hurt experienced by many across the United States.

As schools are mandated to perform routine emergency drills, one of those drills is the code red lockdown drill.

Classroom doors are always locked, but in the case of a lockdown, all windows must be shuttered, all electronic devices must be silenced and/or turned off, all lights must be turned off, and all students are required to sit on the floor in the designated safety zone.

The Chemistry laboratory at MAST@FIU has concrete tiles and sitting on the cold floor for up to ten minutes is uncomfortable for the students, and for me as well. A floor covering would help to make us more comfortable during the mandatory emergency lockdown drills.

The ALAZA Periodic Table Rug is five feet by seven feet in area, and three (3) of these rugs will be adequate to comfortably fit me and twenty-six students during an emergency lockdown drill.

The ALAZA Periodic Table Rug will also provide an opportunity for my students to silently peruse the structure, patterns, and elements of the periodic table while we go through the process. A donation of these rugs would make a difference in the level of comfort we experience in our safety zone during a lockdown drill.
