Help Mrs. Borders

I teach 6th and 8th grade Science at a rural middle school. We are a NASA Explorer School and are especially committed to inspiring students in science, technology, engineering, and math.

The study of chemistry can be a very dry subject without the use of hands-on activities. Our science budget was severely reduced (along with budget cuts district-wide) this past year. Our standards are high, but we are in need of materials. My students anxious to engage in hands-on chemistry activities.

The requested resources will allow me to design labs that involve hands-on investigations. The students will investigate mixtures and solutions through the use a kitchen chemistry kit. They will hypothesize as to why salt dissolves in water and pepper does not. They will also devise a way to separate a salt, pepper, gravel, and water mixture using the properties of the substances. In addition, my students will use food coloring and water to investigate diffusion. Students will also engage in chemistry experiments that can be done with substances commonly found in their kitchens.

You will make it possible for me to design chemistry learning experiences that will inspire students to achieve high levels of critical thinking. By sponsoring this proposal, my NASA Explorer School students will not only study chemistry on Earth, but will expand their thinking to hypothesize as to chemical interactions on other planets.
