My Students

At the sound of the bell other classrooms can hear, "I CAN BECAUSE I WILL, I WILL BECAUSE I CAN; IF I THINK I CAN'T I WILL! THAT'S GRIT!" being chanted from my scholars. Now my scholars are ready to internalize those words by inquiring and reflecting using their interactive science notebooks

I was given the ultimate blessing to educate 100 scholars.

99% of my scholars are African-American/Latino and 1% is White. My charter school believes relentlessly in the mission that every scholar deserves the opportunity to attend and graduate from a four-year college/university. From day one, scholars are met with the motto "College or DIE!". Starting in 8th grade, they take college courses, such as conceptual Physics and Algebra, and they are currently taking Chemistry in 9th grade. By the time they are Juniors they will start the "Early College" program to take accredited college courses while in high school. Even with our unapologetic mission for each scholar, they face substandard housing, sub par access to food and substantial dysfunction. And there comes a point where my school needs help meeting the resources that my scholars lack. Our parents brought their kids to my school to give them an option to the seemingly inevitable. Daily, we work intentionally to fulfill that.

My Project

In my Chemistry class each scholar will be able to solve complex stoichiometry problems, using dimensional analysis with numbers in scientific and standard notation. They will be solving logarithmic equations to calculate the pH/hydrogen ion concentration in acids and bases. Some of my scholars have more challenged math backgrounds and need help with basic math computations. The scientific calculator would help them successfully learn those standards among others. The majority of my scholars are tactile learners, understand through touching. So the atomic models would be great to allow each scholar to actually see the different orientations covalent and ionic bonds can occur. Lastly, I have noticed that the transition from the bell to the Do Now is not as smooth as it could be. Scholars are often trying to use my handheld pencil sharpener to sharpen their pencil. When there is a line of 5 or 6 scholars, that is time consuming. The electric pencil sharpener will help relieve this issue.

Confidence is key to any adolescent; it fuels their motivation to succeed.

This project will lift their spirits because they won't have to stress about lacking a calculator or not being able to visualize abstract concepts. The new additions to our classroom will open up windows of opportunity for scholars that aspire to become medical professionals/scientists. They will become intrinsically motivated to choose the other option my school offers them, COLLEGE! And be prepared when they get there!
