My Students

Chemistry is one of the most difficult of the sciences due to the inability that students have to actually visualize the atoms and molecules that are being studied. My students often lose sight of the beauty and complexity the shape of a molecule provides to how it will react.

My students are from a small suburban school.

There is a pretty wide range of socioeconomic background. The specific students I teach are very motivated young men and women who are sometimes limited by the lack of resources and opportunities the school can provide. These students would really benefit from seeing additional ways to look at science outside of a typical structured curriculum of facts and problems. The majority of my students will work hard and typically go on to attend a 4 year university. These schools range from local community colleges, state schools, and in some cases ,when the families can afford it, to more expensive universities. Our school is located in Vermont which allows for some exposure to the larger world, however in general we are a pretty small, homogeneous group.

My Project

I have always believed that artwork can help to open the mind to new thoughts and opportunities. It is my hope that I can bring some of this belief into my Chemistry Classroom. This past year I had a student who will be majoring in biochemistry and art in college who completed his year long portfolio incorporating the ideas he learned in my class into works of art including, drawings, sculpture, metalwork, and photographs. This has inspired me to try bringing this to my entire class. I personally have a strong interest in carving and would like to share this with my students. In thinking about this I think that by using carving to create block prints, students could carve and then print different molecules that we are studying. This will hopefully allow them to get some inspiration as to the symmetry and purpose of molecular structure and VSEPR theory.

I am really trying to open the eyes of my students.

I want them to get excited about chemistry and see that they can really bring part of themselves to what they are studying. I want them to know that science is not just a bunch of facts and calculations, but rather it is the process of understanding and thinking that helps us build our knowledge. I want them to stretch their talents and make the learning their own.
