Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

Our school is a high-need school that serves under-represented students. I am currently teaching chemistry and many students struggle with this subject because they cannot visualize certain foundations of it. My main focus is to bring the microscopic aspects of chemistry to a macroscopic level that the students can understand and relate.

I am a first-year chemistry teacher in a school that is offering chemistry for the very first time. We share the building with two other schools and so we have a limited amount of space. As a result, I am teaching in a very small classroom with no access to a laboratory. We are lacking essential equipments and materials needed to conduct labs.

My students need chemicals and equipments to perform lab experiments that will grab their interest in the subject. We need experiment kits to conduct experiments in order to provide them with hands-on activities. Laboratory materials and equipments are highly needed. These include pH strips, stirring rods and digital scales for accuracy, as students will be measuring chemicals and mixing them. They need a model to help them visualize atoms and their orbitals. Density cubes are needed to calculate and investigate density of different solids. Conductivity of various metals will allow them to conceptualize the idea of electrical conduction of metals and a flame test demo will captivate them after studying how energy is emitted. Finally, to better provide students with a visual explain how elements interact, dry erase markers of various colors are needed.

With your help, these students will have an opportunity to love chemistry before the year ends. You can expose them to the magic of chemistry and show them that with your support, budget cuts do not have to necessarily mean that their education and exposure will be cut short.
