My Students

We are at a Title I Middle School, 6th-8th grade. This year, we have established the first cheer after school program at our site. We wanted to give students the opportunity to grow as leaders on campus through cheerleading and give them something positive to do after school.

Our students are incredibly passionate about cheer.

Our cheerleaders have committed to an after school program that meets Tuesday-Thursday for two hours. They also continually practice various routines at home or during their passing period times. Cheer has been a huge influence for many of our students to stay focused academically and behaviorally. They have worked hard to do well in school so that they are able to participate actively in cheer. It has been an incredibly positive outlet for many of our students. Students who generally are not able to interact with one another have built strong relationships and continually support and look out for one another during the process.

My Project

In order to continue to encourage students' interest and engagement in cheer, we need mats so we can safely teach them how to tumble and do stunts. We currently have been teaching students various cheers and dances to perform at home football and soccer games, lunch events, and assemblies.

The mats would allow cheerleaders to incorporate tumbling and stunting into the routines they have already been working so hard to learn and master.

Many cheer students mentioned how cheer has influenced them by keeping them active and strong. The mats would give cheerleaders a solid foundation to learn these new stunts.
