My Students

I am the school guidance counselor and basketball coach at a Title I, elementary school in Brooklyn, NY. Our neighborhood school has a multitude of diverse students from many different cultures and backgrounds.

Allowing children to participate in youth sports is a fantastic way for children to explore and develop lifelong skills.

Youth sports not only play an important role in exercise but promotes mental and psychological advances as well. As our school's basketball coach, I recognize that organized sports can be a powerful tool to reach many of my young boys and girls who are struggling to find their balance and purpose.

With the equipment and materials for our new afterschool clubs I can help them achieve personal responsibility so they can succeed academically and socially.

With funding so limited in our school monies for games and kits are non-existent. I'm reaching out for help so we can develop minds of our future leaders.

My Project

Chess is a powerful way of teaching strategy and children who learn the game early develop critical thinking skills that will be used throughout their lives.

We are starting a new chess club in our school where the boys and girls will be using Bloom's taxonomy (high order thinking) and applied learning to their education.

Aside from sports which uses fine gross motor skills to win basketball games, my students will be using these chess tournament style games to learn "cooperation" over "competition."

They will also use the clock timers to learn time management and planning which will be beneficial to their social growth.

With these chess supplies my students will learn through the wonderful game of chess techniques and strategies that will last a lifetime. I can't wait to see them "make the first move"!
