Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

One of the underlying questions that drives scientific investigation is "Where did we come from?" Evolution and adaptation, especially when applied to themselves, are complex ideas for kids to understand.

My students are a diverse group of learners, some who have grown up in the neighborhood and some who have only been in the country a short time.

What they all share is their financial situation: at our school, 100% of the students are living below the poverty line.

My Project

Many of my students are English language learners and many have special needs, but I believe that with individualized instruction and the right learning tools, they are all capable of achieving success. For most of the kids, hands-on learning is a must. These models will do more than a textbook can: they will allow them to both see and feel our connections to nonhuman primates and early hominids. Their own observations and discoveries will help them to comprehend the convoluted and epic history of humans on this planet.

My students face many challenges in the classroom and at home.

In the 40 minutes of science education they receive each day, I must reach each and every one of them and prepare them to perform this year, in high school and beyond. Hands-on, inquiry-based activities will maximize their ability to grasp the vast array of evidence and conjecture surrounding the Theory of Evolution. These skull models will give them the advantage of discovering these relationships for themselves.
