Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students attend my Resource Reading class to bring up their reading levels and be more successful in school, and in life. Most of my students have a hard time staying focused while in class, and my goal is to make them feel that they are in a safe learning environment where they don't have to feel judged.

I teach at a Title I middle school in an urban neighborhood.

Seventy-four percent of our students qualify for free or reduced rate lunches. Many come from very technology-poor homes. My students love technology and topics where they can discuss issues and express opinions. My school lacks the technology to meet my students’ needs, and I am concerned that their lack of exposure will not prepare them for the technology fluency requirements in high school. My goal is to create a classroom environment where students are motivated by technology to improve their literacy and communication skills.

My Project

My students use Chromebooks weekly in class to help them improve their reading levels. The cart will not only help me make sure that the materials are charged up for use each day, but it will ensure the safety of the chromebooks by keeping them locked up each time I leave the classroom. The table that is currently a mess of cords will be gone, making the classroom feel and look cleaner and well organized.

Sudents will be using Chromebooks to improve their proficiency in written expression, vocabulary, grammar, and editing skills.

Our emphasis will be on enhancing sentence fluency, word choice, and organization. We will using the Step-Up-to Writing program to help our efforts. My students do not have a clear concept of how writing can help them reach their goals and it is our hope Chromebooks can support us in this process.

Everyday, the transition into the digital age is increasingly evident and considering the literacy challenges my students already face, I hope to create opportunities for students to not also lack technology skills.

My students’ curiosity and appreciation for technology can be supported by technology with a literacy focus. If I were to receive this grant, it would have an immeasurable impact on my students and teaching!
