This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Project
Many post-pandemic studies have found that disparities in students' academic reading ability are widening. Namely, the students that have traditionally scored lower on standardized tests are falling further behind. Many of these students aren't establishing a reading life and aren't finding books that allow them to build the kind of critical literacy vital to success in contemporary society.
I want my students to be able to find books in our classroom library that they see themselves in, that offer cultural references that they relate to, and feel a connection to characters to suspend disbelief and completely immerse themselves in new books.
If we are able to hook kids with stories and books, like The Firekeeper's Daughter, and Poet X, that genuinely interest them we can help fill some of the gaps in their learning. After all, the best means of improving the reader is by reading.
