Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Give this project a boost!
A chain reaction of support starts with one share.
"Be the change you want to see in the world," Mahatma Gandhi said, and my students apply this quote in my classroom and dream big every day. But we need a place to gather to really make children from all backgrounds comfortable and stay engaged.
We come from a high-poverty neighborhood large city in the San Joaquin Valley of California.
We are children of migrant, farm, construction and oil field workers. We are lucky enough to attend a school with excellent leadership and community involvement. Our second graders are loving little sponges just waiting to soak up and drop of knowledge or love. We are all learning the English language, regardless of our background and need lots of oral language.
My Project
We treat others how we wish to be treated and come together on a daily basis to build character, support peers, and engage in friendly conversation. During our morning meeting we greet, compliment, and learn how to be responsible citizens and good friends. We come together for shared reading, writing, and math lessons. We sing, read, and share what is important to us. This is a crucial time for us as we begin to learn to trust and relate in an uncertain world.
We currently do not have a designated area for our meeting/learning time. Having a clean, brightly colored place to sit to engage, participate, and share would be a welcomed changes from the uncertainty and sometimes down-trodden environments they often experience at home. So many children need a feeling of security, and we feel that these additions would give them the consistency they are searching for.
We need carpet and an easel to gather around during our morning meeting and all throughout the day during learning time. These basic needs must be fulfilled before other higher-order thinking and learning can be successful.
So many schools in our area consider these items basic classroom furnishings.
With budget cuts, our district hasn't been able to assist teachers with extra (and even basic) costs of the classroom. We ask that you please consider helping us to have a safe, clean, and vibrant place to gather on a daily basis to learn and employ valuable morals and citizenship so desperately needed today in our community and nation.
