How did the Greatest Generation begin? Much has been said about the generation who fought during WWII. Perhaps the depth of their character began in the difficulties of their childhood. Many of these heroes were children during the Great Depression and were molded by their environment. I am one of sixteen teachers with approximately 90 seventh grade students, who teach English Language Arts. Funding provided for teachers to purchase classroom sets is limited to texts used by the entire department. Additionally, our school has changed its instructional format from separate classes for reading and writing to a double block providing a better integration of Language Arts. The textbook is our primary source of literature selections. The acquisition of 35 copies of The Children of the Dust Bowl: The True Story of the School at Weedpatch Camp is an integral part of this unit, which would not be taught effectively without it. The theme of conflict pervades the story. While students are familiar with the meaning of conflict, it is a difficult literary concept for adolescents to grasp. This book would provide numerous opportunities to expand on the communication process, composed of writing, reading, listening, and speaking through a variety of mediums. In turn, students learn communication is a tool for expressing, managing, and countering conflict. Conflict will be viewed by the students as a force which is neither negative nor positive but an energy of communication to be manipulated in a variety of ways for a particular purpose. Various products will result, including but not limited to written activities and responses created in class as part of daily activities. This allows for broad student expression and choice. Some examples might be sample diary entries, newspaper articles, simulated editorials, personal and business letters, essays on various topics, and mock advertisements depicting the era. Students will identify problems and solutions encountered by the Okies. This text promotes collaboration in a variety of activities. Students will write from different points of view, a mother, a child, a businessman, and a farmer through analysis of setting and characters. The True Story of the School at Weedpatch Camp is a most versatile, inspiring text, timeless with great historical, literary and instructional value.
