My Students

We need lots of character books that my students can relate to in order to sustain their reading interests. However, with the recent budget cuts they will not have new books to read that will keep them interested in reading.

I am a first grade teacher teaching in a in a low-income neighborhood.

My school is composed of new immigrants from China and families with low-incomes. Families in this community rely heavily on schools to help broaden their children's experiences and interests. Parents work long hours simply to make ends meet and rarely have time to help their children with schoolwork. Moreover, my students have challenges learning English, compounding an already difficult and frustrating situation at home.

My Project

I would like to add 45 books to my library from different character series that will inspire my students to read more widely during independent reading time. These books will offer many more choices for my students to engage their reading interests while strengthening their literacy skills. As you know, these are the crucial years of a child's life when they are learning important literacy skills that will serve as the building blocks of their academic life. We need to offer options to our students to sustain their interest in reading. If schools lack books, a very basic need for all students, then how can our children improve and grow? How can they love reading? Moreover, most of my students are still learning English; these books will help them get accustomed to the English Language that will improve their child's English skills.

You will make it possible to capture my students' interests in reading by offering them books that are relevant to their lives.

They will be on a journey of self-discovery by finding their interests in books. They will explore the world through these books. In turn, they will persevere academically.
