My Project

Do you remember the first time you got to write in a book? Highlighting or underlining? Writing notes to yourself in the margins or dog-earing pages? This can make reading for a class feel very personal. My first book was Invisible Man by Ralph Ellison for AP English in 12th grade, but I would like to let students feel this connection in 5th grade.

This is the most significant text for our unit focused on answering the question: How do cultural beliefs and values guide people?

In this unit, students learn about U.S. westward expansion and the impact on indigenous people--specifically the Nimiipuu tribe (also called the Nez Perce). After a close study of this text, students read a speech Chief Joseph gave to congress in 1879 where he detailed the treatment of Nimiipuu people by white Americans and their allies.

This novel introduces students to Chief Joseph. While they have learned about the Nimiipuu lifestyle and how they were forced from their land, this text shows the effect the conflicts had on individuals and the tribe as a whole.
