Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I teach a first grade class of energetic and enthusiastic students in the Bronx. We are a diverse class who are eager to learn. My students are so excited to come to school each day and enjoy spending time in the classroom. They love to learn new things every day! Our school is an amazing school with amazing students and staff. However, we are a new school and are extremely limited when it comes to resources.

We desperately need more chapter books to build our classroom library!

My students have been waiting all year to be on a reading level where they would be able to read chapter books!! Now that several of them are ready to read these amazing books, our library really lacks chapter books. My students are ready to learn how to synthesize the information in a text and apply their critical thinking skills to analyze character relationships throughout a chapter book. I can only hope to be able to provide my students with this important resource to challenge them and take their reading to the next level.

My Project

We need chapter books in our classroom! These books will be a great addition to our classroom library. My students are ready for the challenge of reading picture books and are so excited at the mere thought of a chapter book. These books will provide my students the opportunity to read series books on their level that will not only interest, but challenge them. By reading numerous books across a book series, the students really get to know the characters and are able to make personal connections between themselves and their books, or even from book to book across the series. These books would really engage my students and help in bringing characters from stories to life. As a component of our reading program, the students take book baggies home daily, to read at home with their parents and families. Building our chapter series classroom library will allow my students to take home more books and will strengthen our home-school connection. This will provide opportunities for my students' families to have meaningful and enriching conversations at home about these wonderful stories. When students are not only reading fiction books in the classroom, but at home with their families as well, their reading can only get better and stronger! Please help me, help my students, continue their reading journey by reading chapter books!
