My Students

This year is my first year as a fifth grade teacher. During the last school year I was the computer lab instructor at the same school. Because I was the computer lab instructor, I had the chance to get to know all of the students at my elementary and I felt very fortunate to already know nearly all of the students in my class this year.

My lovely fifth graders are in need of guided reading books for our small differentiated reading groups.

They will use these guided reading books to improve their individual reading levels and become better readers. This school is a Title I school and I have 27 students in my fifth grade class. While many students are coming from a low-income background, it is my goal to make school a fun, safe, and positive experience for all. Each student will get the opportunity to use these guided reading books during our small reading groups this year.

My Project

Everyday I meet with 3 different guided reading groups. I meet regularly with a total of 6 groups in my class to help improve the students' reading. We focus on skills such as fluency, comprehension, and vocabulary. I have found that many of the students have already read the chapter books coming from our school's guided reading library.

When I asked the students what would make guided reading more engaging for them, they said they wanted more chapter books!

The students are ready for fifth grade reading material. I have picked out several chapter books that I think my fifth graders will love including Maniac Magee, The Lightning Thief, The City of Ember, and There's a Boy in the Girls Bathroom.
