My Students

"You Have Power" is the message I give to my students daily. "Use language effectively" I demand. As an English Language Arts teacher, I strive daily to instill in my students the realization that the effective use of language can create positive change both in themselves and the world they live in.

My students are primarily residents of Harlem, New York who oftentimes have not experienced much of what the world has to offer outside of the four corners of their block.

They are bright, talented, diverse individuals who lack the exposure necessary to realize their true academic and social/emotional potential. They are limited in how far they can dream, achieve, aspire to, not because of ability, but because that ability has not been nurtured. It is our belief that our students are "leader in training" preparing for the opportunity to dream, achieve and aspire big. Through a wide range of academic and social opportunities we seek to expose our students to many different experiences which will open their minds to limitless potential for their future.

My Project

Ray of Hope is a community service project recently founded by the students in my class. This project intends to tackle the many social issues affecting the community my students live in. They intend to do this by creating a series of public service announcements used to raise awareness of the problems and support for addressing those problems. By securing the four video camcorders requested, my students will be able to work in groups to both record and film the announcements created with newly learned advocacy writing skills. In this way the students will be able to improve their reading/writing skills and their advocacy and community awareness skills; thus learning first hand how education empowers and can create positive change.

My students are well aware of the social ills which plague their community and feel a responsibility to address those ills, if only in a little way.

They have learned that the effective use of language is powerful. Words have power, images have power, music has power. My students understand that they have power. They intend to use that power to improve not only their lives, but the lives of the people who live in their community. They need your help to make their dream a reality.
