My goal every year since I have started teaching is to impact the lives of the children and families that I work with. If you help fund my proposal you will be helping me make this goal a reality. I currently work in what is considered a high needs school and neighborhood am teaching in a special education classroom at a school in Brooklyn. My goal is to provide my students with a wide range of resources that encourage and develop their learning. Right now my class is without a working computer or printer. We lack many things but I feel that having a computer will give us a leg up in alternative forms of learning. I am currently servicing students with special needs that range from mental retardation to emotionally disturbed. They need so much support to improve their learning and other issues. Having a working computer will help our classroom move forward in a big way. The students in my class who are visual learners will have the opportunity to make learning come alive for them during center time. Having a computer in the classroom will also help me locate teacher resources so that I can supplement the things that the students are currently learning. My goal is to show the students that computers can be a resource just like the library. I want my students to learn how to use the Internet as an informational resource and learn that all questions even the silly ones have an answer. When I talk about the various experiences that I have had my students are sometimes not able to relate but with a computer we can go to the Internet an see things as a class. My goal is to show my students that knowledge is power and to get this power we need certain tools and a computer is one of them. I just want to show the students that life can be outside of the things they see everyday. I want to open their eyes to a new world outside of Brooklyn. Please help! many times we feel that the problems in the world are too large for and individual to make a dent but when it comes to changing the life of a child sometimes all it takes it something small to make a big difference.
