My Students

Most of my students attend their classes each day, complete their homework, play sports, and yes, they might even play on their devices/video games. However, many tell me they don't have any "good" books at home, and reading each night is required. We need NEW, diverse, multicultural, inclusive, GREAT book titles that will help educate, empower, and inspire. We want kids to speak up and "do the right thing" when real world challenges like bullying, racism, divorce, or mental illness enter their young lives. I want books to be easily accessible for my students. I do not have enough new book titles for my students in my classroom library, nor do I have multiple copies of great books for "Book Clubs". I need popular books that will continue to spark empathy and teach life lessons to my students.

My students are voracious readers, and they crave exciting new novels they can relate to for our upcoming Social Issues Book Club Unit.

Many middle schoolers in our diverse community have taken an interest in social justice, and will find the courage to fight for their own rights and the rights of others by reading both fictional and real life inspirational stories.

My Project

My Sixth Grade teammates and I have planned some exciting upcoming Reading and Writing Units with our students. My favorite one, and the one that our students "loved" last year, was the "Social Issues" Book Club Unit. In this unit, students read in Book Club format and tackle issues/themes such as: feelings of exclusion, understanding self and others, culture and diversity/responding to racism, stereotypes and prejudices, fitting in, finding the good in people and places, and finding our way in the world as we overcome obstacles. One book example is I Am Malala, the story of the young teen who defied the Taliban in Pakistan, and demanded that girls be allowed to receive an education. As we know, she was shot . . . she survived to tell her story, and went on to win The Nobel Peace Prize. These stories matter. Kids need to read these inspiring stories.

I want my students to read deeply, experience powerful "Book Club" discussions with their peers, and in doing so, learn that it is possible to live peacefully in a world of differences, while feeling empowered to find resolutions to the challenges we face in a sometimes confusing world.

My students LOVE getting new books. Don't we all? These children are curious, compassionate, avid readers, forever searching for the latest and greatest new titles on our classroom bookshelves! They often team up with classmates and form "Mini Book Clubs" on their own. The more fantastic "life changing" books I can get into their hands, the better. These students are our future leaders. Books change lives.
