Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

"The purpose of education is to replace an empty mind with an open one." - Malcolm Forbes Do you remember the first time you walked away from a conversation feeling as though you'd learned significantly more than if you'd only read about the very same topic in a book?

Last year, in an effort to create a safe, non-academic space where my students could gather and enjoy convivial conversation, I began something we call "Friday Forum." Students would bring their lunch with them and we'd sit around a shared table and students would raise questions they couldn't otherwise in class - either due to subject matter or time constraints.

Given the intimate nature of our gatherings and small group size, it afforded us the opportunity to also use our meetings to try new things. Following the success and popularity of our first tea-tasting, tea became a staple of our Friday Forum gathering. On occasions when students knew teachers would be staying late in the building, some stayed to help clean up or prepare for the evening's events, then would prepare the steepers and lay out our teacups to enjoy a cup before going home. This year, along with my student teacher, the tradition of Friday Forum continues, and we hope that with it will continue our tea adventures!

My Project

My students need additional kettles to heat water, as well as cups and sleeves for our Tea Fridays. We've had two meetings so far, and much to our delight, the average group size of our meetings has grown exponentially from last year. Students are eager to get together, and as one student put it, "talk about life." Our larger numbers have presented a challenge: heating enough hot water to fill our cups and having enough cups for everyone! Due to the conditions of our campus, students are required to go through metal detectors to enter the building. Last year, this proved to be a challenge as students tried to bring with them ceramic mugs in which to enjoy our tea together. Given the limited time for our lunch period as compared to our instructional periods, even if we were to secure enough ceramic cups for all students, we would then have to find a means of washing and drying them all before students have to head to their next class and me to teach!

With the latest initiatives to see recycling practices brought to campus, and the availability of a compost bin in our campus garden, we've concluded the best solution would be to serve our tea this year in compostable cups that students will not only be able to safely dispose of on campus, but to take with them to their next class if needed - which also keeps us from wasting the materials (tea) we've been given!
