My Students

My students just won't give up. It doesn't matter that they have to sit 6 feet apart; they measured and moved their desks. How do they get from classroom to classroom without exposure? They created a schedule that allows them to stay in one classroom and has the teachers come to them. Breaks outside? They invented games that are totally interactive without breaking the 6 foot rule. They joined the school Wellness committee and created mask stations around the school. They are creating the school they need to have during a pandemic that is doing its best to prevent them from doing just that.

They refuse to let COVID-19 make the rules.

They look at each new challenge created by COVID as an opportunity to say, "Do your best." And they do. My students work as diligently as any group I have taught, but COVID has left its mark on each of my students. It hasn't been easy; they miss working together...sitting at a table with a group of their friends developing an idea for a project and in the moment laughing and being silly and creating something wonderfully academic. COVID has robbed them of that.

My Project

These brain games and puzzles will be used to challenge my students. My students want to work in groups again, but we have to figure out a structure within COVID safety guidelines. This project, Challenging the Creative Brain, uses games and puzzles that scaffold by difficulty level; this requires the students to challenges themselves and to work through these puzzle challenges together.

This project encourages a creative approach to group work during the pandemic.

With these puzzles and brain teasers, they will be able to talk to each other and see what the other is doing clearly without being close to each other. These resources are perfect for group work that allows for social distancing and active student involvement. These puzzles are large enough for students to see and participate with other students trying to solve the puzzles and they are of such varying complexity that they often require interaction to solve. The bonus is that the puzzles are all metal and therefore easy to clean; students can use them without worry.
